I really enjoyed this story of a socially awkward alien trying in vain to complete his mission on earth but becoming more human as he does. No spoilers do I’ll stop there. Funny, and makes you think - great. Audio version was well performed too.

The most beautiful character development in a novel I’ve ever had the chance to digest. I have never read a better perception of love than this. Such a unique take on it too. After reading this, I feel luckier to be a human and grateful for the life I’ve been given.

***These are my random thoughts after finishing the book. Some of the thoughts are an overall review of the book, or any questions/feelings that nagged at me throughout. There will almost definitely be spoilers. Read at your own risk.***   ‐----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.5 stars down

First half definitely stronger than the second half
There's a pretty good story buried underneath all the over-sentimentality
Way too over-written and over-explained
Hated that list at the end
Reminded me of that comic strip with the aliens discovering earth things and enjoying them
As expected by the MC, dog Newton was my favorite character in the book
funny hopeful lighthearted fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes

Matt Haig never disappoints. This is a humorous, depressing, yet endearing portrayal of what it could be like if aliens were monitoring and infiltrating our planet. Haig is ever so capable of recognizing how hard life really is, and how looking at the mundane details of our day to day activity can bring us love and joy.

The Humans is an unusual reading experience for sure. I loved the start. It begins very Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, tongue in cheek, and seemed like a cute commentary on how weird humans are. But suddenly it became weird and cringy- not funny in the slightest- completely schmoopy, preachy, and uninteresting. For such a short book I almost didn't finish it- I was just too mad that the author made such a drastic shift out of nowhere.

I wish I had read this in 2013, when I was young and hopeful 😂. But reading this now was complicated. I wonder if the alien main character would feel the same way about humanity if this book took place today.

Not as good as his later novels (particularly the Midnight Library) but I still really, really enjoyed it.

This book kept me up all night. I got choked up how Matt Haig manages to express the beauty in being a human on this planet.

The final two chapters of this book are beautiful and bumped it up from a 4.5 star to a 5 star read.

Home—is where I want to be
But I guess I’m already there
I come home—she lifted up her wings
Guess this must be the place.
