March 10, 2023 - I still laughed out loud and appreciated the reflections on humans. I'm happy to say my second read of it was enjoyed just as much as the first.
This is like a novelization, with a dark twist, of a Nathan Pyle comic. I ADORE Nathan Pyle's Strange Planet. I loved the humorous observations of humans and our nature. This book was an equal balance of humor and heart. I really loved it!

I let out an audible gasp while reading this book on a busy train. A few people looked up and I think they took note of the title of the book I was reading :)

Intriguing…
I really loved The Midnight Library, so thought I would give this one a try. I will admit it was difficult to capture my interest as I just found it weird at first. I did enjoy it though and it was a touching story about an alien giving up eternity to remain a human. Good effort and easy read.

Brilliantly funny, and yet only 3 starts. A nice read about a mathematician who gets kidnapped by aliens to prevent him from spreading the solution he found to a century old problem. An alien takes his place and shares his experience between "the humans" on earth with the reader. Exceptionnally funny, even confronting at times, yet the "alien" part made it difficult for me to digest. It was fine in the beginning, to set the scene, but further in the story some events just go beyond my imagination. I admit, as an economist and practical person, the boundaries of my imagination will probably more quickly reached, so maybe someone else won't have that much trouble with it. Aliens aside, Matt Haig tells a very funny story on our species which made me enjoy the book, read it until the end and not put it aside when things get too "alienated". The 97 pieces of advice to humans at the end just has to leave you with a smile on your face, as do the funny yet confronting quotes about, amongst other, beef eating and catholicism. A book that tells you to name every day of the week saturday and to call work "play" in your mind is just something that has to make you smile. Nice read. But sometimes too far fetched for me and the story leaves some gaps and shallow characters….
I think the book started out well. I liked the concept, and the writing felt a bit like Douglas Adams.
Unfortunately, I think things fell off a lot in the last 20%-25% of the book.
