The writing in this novella flowed very well and the author's prose was easy to digest. The novella serves as a good exploration of Kilo as a character, including his fears and the expectations he has for himself. There's little to say about the plot of the story, since the events themselves are secondary to the examination of Kilo's character. The novella provides somewhat of an introduction to the series but not to a great extent as there is little world-building or examination of Japanese samurai culture, which inspired this story.

I think the readers who will get the most out of the this novella are those who have already read Shadow's Hand, the first full-length novel in the series, as opposed to someone reading this as an introduction to the series.
