(Reading as a teacher looking for engaging texts for my students) - one of the lower grades at our high school reads this as a whole-class novel, and students say good things about it. I wanted in on the conversation, and so I gave it a read. It just never really hooked me. I thought the characters were a little flat and the plot a bit too predictable. I can see how students might relate to it having lived through the pandemic a few years ago, but I just feel like there are better texts with a more egaging narratives or more complex themes to wrestle with out there.

honestly a really good, realistic book showing all the different ways people can respond to a horrible crisis. howeverrrrr the first third of the book i wanted to punt the book against the wall because of the characters. like it makes sense they’re the way they are: it shows how an event like this can mature people but i just was not in the mood for it

also garrett is the best guys everyone give it up for garrett

3.5 stars

I liked the concept, and it was generally well-done to show the chaos and break-down of society. Well written; I enjoyed the Scythe books so I expected to enjoy this one more. But parts of it didn't seem very realistic, some of the characters were annoying, and I kept thinking couldn't you just order cases of bottled water online, at least in the beginning....?

Sehr spannendes Buch. Jedoch werden die Hintergründe, wie es soweit kommen konnte, zu wenig beschrieben.

3.5 ⭐️ All the characters were so annoying. Normally I don’t mind unlikeable main characters, but almost everyone was insufferable. I enjoyed the story though, so that didn’t completely ruin the experience. Interesting concept and well-written.

Upon picking up this book, I did not realize it would be a YA book. Overall, it was a decent story. It was especially poignant, as someone who lives in California. It is a solid 3 stars. If I had known it was a YA book, I would not have picked it up.

This was a fascinating read. A super interesting concept and really well executed as well. It takes complicated ideas about the human condition and survival instincts and makes them easy to read and understand.
