Dry is what happens when the water runs out. Alyssa’s quiet California street turns into a war zone of desperation and her parents go missing on the hunt for water. She and her brother must brave the unknown in this new world of theirs, facing fires and dehydration in this close to home dystopian.

The drought has come and the people of southern California turn to desperate measures. The situation is realistic, although drastic, and will definitely make students think about water shortages worldwide (like South Africa recently). The drama is intense, the tension high, and so many problems to think about, it's hard to prioritize. Overall though, the children being left on their own by their parents seems completely nuts, especially Kelton's parents letting him leave after what happens. Shusterman obviously tries to include EVERY SINGLE danger in one story, every glimmer of hope dashed by another roadblock or tragedy.

I'm not sure the audiobook was the way to go with this one. However, I think if I had read it, I would like this even less.

Not interested at all with the characters. Each new one introduced was worst that the next one. I kinda wished more people died since that would've made the odds of them surviving harder. Hell, they were damn lucky by the end.

I didn't think the odds weren't high enough. However, the fact that
Kelton's brother was in their hideout for months and oddly, came back at the wrong time and got himself killed. That was actually insane

This book explores a bit how society would crumble without water. I actually thought shit didn't hit the fan that quickly - man, people would go absolutely crazy. Most people don't even realize the scope of how bad it would get. I also found unrealistic how the whole water was resolved (?).

How do I go from loving Henry to wanting to shoot him? I loved it. So easy to read. But it did get a bit confusing with the switching POV's but it was Two Degrees-esq done right. It hurts when the girl goes into the van for water. I thought there were red flags in Jacquin. Oh, I was wrong. I was in for the twists and turns. I am still Team Alyssa and Kelton. He lost his brother and when he found out it was sad. Henry was self-interested and he was not cool.
