As ever, it's lovely to escape to the world of Flo and Lady Hardcastle. Now on official business, they get to find out about planes and suss out who is a foreign spy. But more importantly, they lark about village, eat absurd amounts of food and have a bally good time.

I love Lady Hardcastle and Florence Armstrong! The comic patter between the two just makes the books for me. The historical detail helps me see and understand pre-WWI Great Britain, an era that I don’t know much about. Lady Hardcastle’s facility with science is a good touch as is Armstrong’s ability to do everything else. Check out the archery competition in the first book for sheer fun. My preference is to read series books in order, but whatever you decide, read book one “A Quiet Place in the Country” first.
