‘The Eccentric Doctor of the Moonflower Kingdom’ is a Chinese-inspired, historical and political romance manga. Initially I was attracted by the pretty cover but glad I picked it up because I was relieved to find an interesting story and plot.

Centred around an eccentric doctor and a Crown Prince, the manga introduces us to the political goings-on within the kingdom and the potential backstabbing in the palace.

Koyou instantly became a fun heroine, especially with her love for muscles—same girl heh—it made her relatable and such a humorous character in the manga. Her character is on of intellect and kindness. I really enjoyed reading about Koyou and Shin’s platonic relationship; they seemed very much like family than just doctor and assistant. Also, the way Shin watches out for Koyou reminds me of an older brother which was so wholesome.

Now, Prince Keiun. He is another character who cares for those around him. We’re first introduced to him while he is seeking help for his friend—Shiei. OH and the scene where he discovered that he has just ate Mr. Yang was absolutely hilarious, it had me in tears. To him then requesting that Mrs. Yang and her kids accompany them on their journey to the capital, such a cute moment.

The political intrigue in this first volume sets up the story, so there isn’t an overwhelming amount thrown into the mix, just enough to keep you wanting to read on. Though, clearly there are those within the palace trying to take out Prince Keiun. I can’t wait to see what becomes of the plot, especially with Keiun hopes of wanting to help his people through Koyou’s abilities.

Overall, a very interesting first volume with plenty of intriguing and humour.
