The middle got a bit boring but I like the idea of following the entire life of someone. I wish there was more descriptions instead of just facts and explanations of the past.

Compelling family saga and historical journey from 1937 to 1994 beginning in the Spanish Civil War through the rise of Allende in Chile and the overthrow by Pinochet. Deeply about love and family and survival.

This didn't have the smoothness or lucidity of previous books- it was a tad repetitive and time lept forward and back all muddled up in the same paragraphs which made some parts confusing. I enjoyed it, but I felt it didn't have the polish I've come to expect from Allende.

I might just not be used to this style of book, but I found the pacing a little weird (part 1 spanned two years, part 2 spanned three years, and then part 3 spanned 46 years). I can't tell if I was supposed to like Victor, but I didn't. As in life, the female characters carried this one--Ophelia was hilarious.

i LOVED the complex relationships in this book and how they evolved over time. my only complaints was that the first third was really slow and pacing was weird at times (like 10 year jumps in the middle of paragraphs) but otherwise its a really hopeful book about love- and not just the romantic kind
