Delightful little mystery. Already have the next book on hold.

(3.5) This sequel is more enjoyable than the first because some of the fragmented mysteries are starting to come together and get solved. It also puts more characters’ strengths and skills to good use (i.e. Janelle). I still do not find the MC’s ego and inability to keep promises charming, even within the “stubborn and defiant” heroine trope. However, what redeems this book is everything else: the rest of the interesting cast, vivid descriptions of the autumnal atmosphere, and the mysterious plot at large.

i’m torn between a 3 and a 4 star review but i had to go with my gut. i fucking hated the first half of this book. jesus christ it was god awful. the first half of the book is literally just a retelling of the first book. you probably don’t even have to read the first book because the second book will just retell it in about 160 pages. however, the second half of the book. wow. definitely saved this whole thing. MARSH? THE FBI AGENT? wow. amazing. i never would have guessed it, and the way the stair riddle tells you it was him?? wow. very very good. fenton dead? the ending was very very good. who is the kid?? all i know is i am excited to read the next one. i wonder where will it go now that we have the murderer? will we find out what happened to alice? i can’t wait. remove the first half of this book and it was splendid.

Ugh. Another cliffhanger!? This one didn’t draw me in as fast or strong as the first did. Though I did enjoy the glimpses back in time I thought it took away from the mystery aspect of the book and made it more of a normal story. There were some pretty long leaps for our detective to figure things out since she didn’t get to read the time flashbacks. This book was fine and I will finish the series.
