While I struggled to read the book due to the long paragraphs and lack of speech marks I found the Audiobook very easy to listen to. The narrator did a fantastic job and his voice was perfect for the story.

Although it’s a dystopian novel I couldn’t help but think of the troubles in Ireland whilst reading it. This story is about a mother’s struggle to survive with her 4 children & all the emotions that go with civil unrest. Especially when you have children old enough to fight.

A heartbreaking but captivating novel.

Just a personal recommendation ... the audio is easier than attempting to read on your own ;)

This book was on the Goodreads Summer Challenge (July-Sep2025), Acclaimed Titles. I'd already heard some buzz (in a Facebook group), enough that I'd realized the audio was an AudibleExclusive. I purchased the audio during one of their sales, so it was waiting in my library. I was able to grab the Kindle copy from the library ...

BUT ... I think I HAD to experience this in audio, and kudos to the narrator for adding what the printed text did not. This is one of those books where the author makes a stylized choice ... here, HUGE blocks of text. No quotes around dialog. Honestly, I glanced at the Kindle copy and it literally hurt my eyes. I need the line breaks, paragraphs. In audio? I never would have guessed it was written in this "unique" (and I don't think it's a good thing, I would be interested in a discussion about it) way.

There were discussion questions included in the text (and an indication of more on the GroveAtlantic website ... I followed that link and it was a bit of a struggle to find the book, the search didn't work. And then it was only the same questions, no other extras) ... and I really appreciated these questions, they made me think (a little book club in my mind).

A recent read was Our Missing Hearts, which had some similarities (I was glad I hadn't read the books back to back, and probably should have had a bit more time between). Some of the early changes can be warnings for so many societies, government taking over personal rights. I read how this was representative of the situation (most recently) in the Ukraine, and for me that really resonated, and ironically (as this is fiction) made it so much more real to me.
