Good first book in the series, interesting reading a detective novel set in Egypt with the main character from Sudan. The back story was for me the best part of the book and the novel leaves it open presumably for more to come in later novels. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Somewhere between a 3 and 4 but I will be harsh and stick with a 3.

I enjoyed the writing - some of the "twists' were predictable, but I am not sure if they weren't meant to be. It was the central character's bumpy journey to work it all out which made it a very enjoyable read.

I will add the next in the series to my booklist.

Egypt-set mystery. Well written, vividly descriptive, the backstory was terrifying and gripping and important about religious fanaticism in a collapsing state. I just don't think this is a natural mystery author: the crime solving was rather of the 'pay random visit to cafe, waiter has vivid recollection of a random conversation decades ago that gives you the next piece of plot' type.

Author has written non-detective stuff as [a:Jamal Mahjoub|219918|Jamal Mahjoub|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1391283023p2/219918.jpg] and is a very superior writer so will check out his non-tec stuff instead.
