Laughed out loud. Teared up. Followed the author on social media. I'd say the book worked.

This book not only advocates for the rights of service dogs and their handlers, but also advocates for those who live with psychological issues. Psychological issues can happen to anyone, and it's unfortunate that it is so stigmatized.

My second Susannah Charleson book and I loved it, as I did the first. Not quite as much, something about Puzzle's story just drew me in and kept me there, but I did really enjoy this. Her descriptions of Jake Piper and the Poms had me laughing out loud more than once. I'm not a huge non-fic reader, but I'll read anything Susannah puts out there and if you're a dog person, you should too.

What a great book. The dogs in here are service dogs, but they service individuals with various anxiety disorders or OCD or other situations that are not always visible to the eye. Charleson discusses the various ways she trains, how she comes across the many dogs she does train and the rewarding aspects of training dogs for this type of service.

Not too sentimental and written in a way that makes the material feel fresh and new.

This book has the rambling feel of a long conversation with and old friend.

Okay, this book absolutely warmed my animal loving heart. I by chance found this at my local goodwill awhile ago and finally just now getting to it. I've always been an animal lover, especially dogs. I've also always had an interest in service animals and have actually been wanting to go down the path to become a trainer so this book just called to me.
I also definitely cried a few tears at some of the specific stories in these pages. My love and appreciation for dogs and working dogs has grown even more. I didn't think that was even possible but here we are.

This book was a great read! I would recommend it to anyone who likes dogs, reading about dog training/rescue, or wants to learn more about what service dogs can do for humans. If you are considering reading this book, you will probably like it. The story of the author training her dog for service (and eventually finding dogs for others) is interspersed with stories of other service dogs and their handlers. These are very interesting and I'm glad they are included, because it gives the reader an idea of the variety of dogs, handlers, and tasks that can be appropriate for service dogs. However, the author's connection with these stories is unclear, and they are a bit jolting at first. They each have their own chapter, but don't segue nicely into/out of the author's story, and the author's involvement with these cases is confusing. I'm stingy with my 5 star ratings, and this confusion is what kept this book from receiving 5 stars.
I also think that the subtitle of this book is largely misleading. It was not what I was expecting given the title. From the title, I was expecting that the book would involve the author collecting dogs who failed adoption/handling/behavior screenings and teaching them how to be with humans to the extent that they would become service dogs. That is not what this book is, but this book is still fantastic.
If you are going to read this book, you may also want to know that yes, there is some dog death in this book. I think it is handled well, but maybe have a box of tissues nearby. Just in case you need them.
