This book had been on my radar since it came out, but also... this was not at all what I thought it was going to be about? I don't know what I was confusing it with.

A lovely queer addition to one of my favourite genres, books about groups of friends and how they change over decades.

This book felt like a jewel, like one of the metaphors laid out in the writing. It was simply so beautiful, wrapped with such pain, but inherently hopeful at the end of it.
Malena's death near the end really shocked me, but it didn't feel cheap or like a 'bury your gays' ending, which I appreciated

The characters really spoke to me, especially Paz and Malena. I haven't felt like I've really identified with a character in a long time, but all the characters had aspects to them that I connected with.
The writing, I think I mentioned, was simply stunning, and I actually went back and reread certain passages once I was finished the book. This is definitely a five-star.
