Churchill emerges as the great wartime leader of his island nation, famously announced that "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat". His experience in WWI comes through so clearly in this book as he prepares his nation for war and for invasion. 'Their' finest hour? Certainly it was his finest hour. The British people showed their grit in warding off the Nazis, and this book has to be the definitive account of that awful struggle of 1940, the Battle of Britain, as told by the man at the helm.

This second volume, which covers the war from the time Churchill became PM until the end of 1940, basically covers the time when Britain, with aid of its Commonwealth and Dominions fought on alone. It is a very gripping story, but Churchill makes the conclusion seem fore-ordained by insisting throughout that he never doubted they would prevail, and by examining different arenas of the war separately, so that it is much harder to get an overall picture of the tremendous pressure Britain was under and onslaught from all sides.
