Going into Bitterblue, I was initially taken aback at the length. I have been listening to the audiobooks for the series and while the last two were 12 hours long, this one was 18. It seemed a bit too long for what we needed it for.

I loved Bitterblue, both in Graceling and in her own book. She is strong and wants to do what’s right. Seeing as how she’s raised by a torturous monster, it’s amazing that she turned out so well rounded.

This book takes place 8 years after Graceling, but when we meet Fire again towards this end, we find out she’s been married for 48 years. So it’s been almost 50 years since her book. I’d love a book at some point that gives us a little more info about what she’s done in all that time.

There are some off page atrocities that took place during her father’s reign as king. We knew that he was kidnapping children and torturing them, as well as animals… but what we didn’t know is that he was forcing men in his service to rape and slice open young children. That was a bit of a shock that I could have lived without. Coming to terms with it also caused more than one character to commit suicide. So the trigger warnings for this book are a lot more intense than the last two.

I’m excited to see where Winterkeep takes us. While I did enjoy this book overall, it was not my fave.

OMG I had to fight my way through this book. I could not relate to any of the characters. Most of the time they annoyed me so much that I almost, multiple times, wanted to quit reading this book. I have it 2 stars because the only thing I liked about this book was the ending. And that’s what I hate about this series. I don’t like the book, but the ending is interesting enough that I continue with the next book. Pls let the next book be at least a little bit better, with characters that make better decisions.

The perfect ending to the trilogy, with yet another narrator different than the first 2 books of the series. I really liked how it balanced the darkness that is the core of the story, but also had humor and heart in it. It left some lines unfinished, which make me hope I'll hear from some of these characters again--and there are so many I'd love to read more about!

It has been awhile since I read the other two books in the series, so I couldn't really remember who the characters were, but the story was enjoyable without remembering, so I don't think you need to read the others first. I was impatient with working out what was going on, but the conclusion was satisfying enough.
