One of the strangest books I've ever read, but hilarious and so, so good!

Short review: This is a good, unique Christian fiction book. It is more of a parable than a novel (think more Pilgrims Progress than Chronicles of Narnia.) The main character is told by the Apostle Peter that his friend Jesus is actually an imaginary Jesus not the real Jesus. So Matt, helped out by Peter and a talking Donkey and some others, work through Matt's imaginary Jesuses until they find the real one. Good writing and it doesn't feel like propaganda or a sermon unlike much Christian fiction.

Well...this book certainly was wacky. From a talking donkey named Daisy, a motorcycle guy/true seeker, atheists, time travel, comic book shops, and of course...a whole slew of imaginary Jesus. From the Portland Jesus, Attorney Jesus, Legalistic Jesus, New Age Jesus, etc., etc., etc., there was quite a lot going on in this book. And this was my main problem - where to focus? How to follow the plot? Sometimes I found the dialogue witty, sometimes I found it too preachy, sometimes I just found it tiring. But ultimately, it made me think about faith and Christianity and that is what this book was meant to do.

This is a pretty interesting concept about creating an imaginary figure in your mind based on some kind of reality - in this case Jesus. Matt Mikalatos has created several different Jesuses - Jesusi? - that fit his needs during different times in his life. It's an amusing story as he meets and interacts with all of his creations. It's not an overly religious book - just one chapter towards the end. It's an enjoyable read.

An interesting book definitely. I wish the author would make up his mind on what feeling he's trying to convey. One moment the book is full of childish silliness, the next it's acting like other members of a religion are stupid and worthless.
If the author delved more deeply into what philosophies the Imaginary Jesus' come from, that would make it much more interesting, I think.

I'd suggest you just read a preview on Amazon or elsewhere. If you find that funny, you'll probably enjoy the book. If you find the preview more irreverent or even offensive than funny, you may not enjoy it.
That was basically my problem. There were some good points made about how we all get the wrong idea about who Jesus is, but it was hard for me to get past the hijinks. I don't mind hijinks, but when you have Simon Peter punching Jesus in the face, well, I have some trouble. (Even if the Jesus is not the real Jesus, of course, the line still reads, "Pete punched Jesus hard, in the face...")
