I love a book that can play with time but not create more questions than it answers. The creativity is intense and beautiful and I loved getting to read it. It would’ve been a full five but I didn’t love the jumps between narrators and I also felt like it had the potential to go even deeper if the narration had just remained with Cassie. I think this author has the potential to be even more and I can’t wait to read more from him.

I was worried this was going to be another version of 1,000 doors of January but this had such a cool take on magic and the magic system was really cool - something similar to One Dark Window. The sinister nature of everyone looking for the books felt more true to life than most magic systems, and the twist about the origins of the books is a complete brain bender. It’s not a 5 star book, but I can’t actually figure out why because all of the pieces are there.

DID NOT FINISH: 13%

Just ran out of time to read the book from a library loan and won’t get it back for a few weeks. Definitely coming back to it AND plan to read the author’s next book as well.

Interesting concept, unfortunately not given the benefit of strong or likable characters.  The primary antagonist is one dimensional, more a flimsy archetype of “Villain” than an actual person. There is zero reason for the bloodshed and (considerable) gore, so that it feels extraneous to the story.
It’s a fluffy read that takes too long to get to its point.
