I loved The Charm Offensove (both originally and on the recent reread), but Kiss Her Once For Me didn’t hit the spot quite as well, so I wasn’t sure where this would fall. But I loved it and found it hard to put down and it made me cry, which doesn’t happen often.

I very much appreciate the way Alison Cochrun writes about neurodiversity and mental illness and messy people. It means a lot to see it on the page, and even among other romance writers I feel like Cochrun stands out as someone who does these things really well.

When beloved English teacher Joe is given only weeks to live, he asks his two favorite students, Logan and Rosemary, to drive him cross-country so he can die in his favorite Maine cabin. In spite of the fact that they cannot stand each other, they agree to the road trip and the adventure they find will change them forever. This childhood friends to rivals to lovers story explored grief, abandonment, and mortality in such beautiful ways. Rosemary and Logan's banter is engaging, whether they're fighting or making love, and they take such care of Joe and one another. I loved learning about Joe, and his chosen ending is so painful and beautiful all at once. This very much reads like a romcom, even with the graphic depictions of mortality, and I would watch the movie. (And probably judge it harshly. lol) Some parts were a little slow, but the story was good overall and I was literally crying while driving at the end. This romance is on the heavier side, but it's totally worth the tears.

It was a good book. I liked 'The Charm offensive' a tad bit more though. This book does give a good reflection on how it is to say goodbye to someone, the exhausting process of dying. I need to applaud it for that. Honestly Logan and Rosemary were a little bit annoying at times, but I guess that means they were realistically written, because there is no human on this earth who is never annoying. I cried. It was beautiful.

lesbian love story? romantic comedy? summer road trip? yes yes and yes. this book is sweet and sad, funny and heartbreaking. a story about love and loss, family trauma, mental health struggles, and of course, existing as queer in spaces where it sometimes isn’t normalized or accepted. I laughed while reading this book. I definitely cried so many tears while reading this book. I felt seen while reading this book. If you’re looking for an LGBTQ+ love story perfect for the summertime, this is it!
