When beloved English teacher Joe is given only weeks to live, he asks his two favorite students, Logan and Rosemary, to drive him cross-country so he can die in his favorite Maine cabin. In spite of the fact that they cannot stand each other, they agree to the road trip and the adventure they find will change them forever. This childhood friends to rivals to lovers story explored grief, abandonment, and mortality in such beautiful ways. Rosemary and Logan's banter is engaging, whether they're fighting or making love, and they take such care of Joe and one another. I loved learning about Joe, and his chosen ending is so painful and beautiful all at once. This very much reads like a romcom, even with the graphic depictions of mortality, and I would watch the movie. (And probably judge it harshly. lol) Some parts were a little slow, but the story was good overall and I was literally crying while driving at the end. This romance is on the heavier side, but it's totally worth the tears.

Incredibly frustrating read. I enjoyed the road trip, though the New Mexico parts were very incorrect (it is NOT some sort of decolonized queer utopia unfortunately). I adored Joe and his entire storyline. He and his story were written with such care and sensitivity. I loved him right alongside the other characters. Unfortunately, the main characters are incredible frustrating and I found it hard to buy their romance with each other. They were friends/each other’s gay awakenings in middle school. Then they had a falling out and have been bitterly estranged rivals for two decades. This is a compelling setup. Unfortunately, their entire adult romance is based on their relationship as tweens, and I did not root for the adult versions of them to become a couple on their own merits.

The celebrity swearing was also UNBEARABLE.

Very good dog, though.

By far my least favorite of Alison Cochrun’d books so far, Joe notwithstanding.

Spoilers ahead!
This one is for the sad lesbians!

I don‘t think there are words to express the importance of this book to me personally.

So excited for whatever Alison Cochrun does next.
So happy this book exists.

I will say the queer icon swearing thingy really got on my nerves especially because shay mitchell was in there twice and no offense but that made no sense.

I also got really angry at the book for insinuating that Laurel‘s reluctance to be with Joe at the hospital was her „leaving“.
Yes, she was avoiding the situation but I will not sit here and accept a framing where only people with commitment issues GET SCARED OF LITERAL DEATH???
That seriously almost made me stop reading. It should have been addressed differently.
Of course grief can illicit dysfunctional behaviour that is typical of that person in everyday life. But I really really think that if that is the moment you expect someone to prove themselves in any significant way you are being cruel. You‘re allowed to be dysfunctional in grief.

The grief and death and shit made me weep. That is not hyperbole. It made me very not okay.
But it also made me feel seen and opened space to let grief in again which was kind of nice.
