I don't usually write reviews, but this book was awful. The characters were one-dimensional and boring, the book did more "telling" rather than "showing," and it was so over-the-top corny that my eyes hurt from rolling them. The first time a celebrity's name was used as an expletive, it was cute -- the 47th time was unbearable. The writing style was so disjointed and confusing; I don't even know how it passed multiple rounds of edits. Not to mention the very idea of the plot was horrendous. As a former teacher, do I wonder what my past students are up to and occasionally converse with them in their adult lives? Of course. Would I EVER parent-trap them into driving me on my death road trip which includes

changing my adult diapers

and

openly discussing their sex lives

and

seeing my genitals in a painting

ABSOLUTELY NOT. There are some boundaries that should never be crossed, even as adults, and it gave me the ick the whole time. This whole plot was problematic. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because I appreciated the diverse representation of ADHD and how it can present itself in different ways.

After reading and LOVING The Charm Offensive by Cochrun, I was excited to dive into this one! And wow - what a gorgeous exploration of dying and grief alongside a tentative love journey.

Between Logan’s insistence on avoiding all emotions and Rosemary’s obstinate hold onto order, these two characters had plenty of rough edges and… let’s say “room for growth” in the beginning.

Truly, thank goodness for the gem of Joe. One of the best parts of this book was the recurring reminder of how teachers can impact us. Joe provided a bold example and a safe haven for all those students who felt different, especially our FMCs.

Joe continually reminded them of their unique strengths and, through his own second-chance bravery, showed them how it’s never too late to embrace love and new possibilities.

His story was a balance of heart and humor, and I just adored him.

Throughout their cross-country roadtrip, we experienced so many peaks and valleys with them - including the realities of caregiving for someone approaching the end of their life. I respected the raw, authentic nature of this literal journey so much.

The trip was the perfect conduit for both Logan and Rosemary to push past their own self-limitations and lean into the unknown, even when it can feel terrifying. Because love is worth the pain.

There were a few pacing moments in the first half that felt a little too slow for me, but the ending was perfection. Truly one of the most beautiful conclusions I’ve read.

If you enjoy romances that explore grief and the full range of human emotions, I highly recommend this book!

i enjoyed this book, and it definitely had me emotional at the end. with that being said, i got bored during certain points of the book and felt it hard to continue. i also got bored with the cliche tropes of parental trauma making me terrible in my relationships and making me need to control everything. it picked up during the final act and i was glad joe died surrounded by love and his girls. it was worth it by the end!!

This book was beautiful. Heartbreaking and heartwarming. I don’t think I have ever read a book that captured the death process so accurately. I loved this whole book. Dare I say it might be my favorite Alison Cochrun book??
