"A sapphic road trip romcom about death" pretty much sums it up. I thought I'd read one more chapter becaise I couldn't sleep and then I sobbed through the end of the book.

Edit: I've revised my review to 5 stars purely based on how often I think about this book. It clearly stuck with me more than anticipated and I want to acknowledge that.

The first bit of the book was a struggle. In an attempt to do quite a bit of exposition quickly, it felt like there was a lot of telling rather than showing and we were getting repetitive explanations of character motivations that were pretty obvious from their behaviors. But I found the characters very complex and compelling once we got into the heart of the book. My biggest gripe (other than the beginning) was the ADHD representation. It felt a little like the author was using it as a catch-all explanation for a lot of things that were not likely. For instance, ADHD doesn't cause mania, and Rosemary's anxiety seemed to be more of its own diagnosis than ADHD related. But, everyone's experience with ADHD is different, so maybe this will resonate more with others.

This left me reflecting on the lasting effects of different kinds of relationships and how we can choose our strongest bonds. I LOVED the relationship the women had with Joe.

I have a headache from crying so much. I think I sobbed through at least a third of the book. This was such a beautiful exploration of grief, death, neurodivergence, and vulnerability.

I’ve heard good things about this book for a while now and I’m so happy to say it lived up to its expectations!

The Joe storyline really tugged at my heartstrings and made me tear up quite often!

I also think the romance in this was super well done. It made me think about the difference between a good romance and an ok romance (imo) and it always comes down to showing not telling. In other books it’ll be “he looked at her sexy legs and sexy mouth and thought she looked so sexy” but in this book it was about the more subtle, nuanced ways to show a character is admiring the other character, you don’t have to spell it out for us.

I’m really not a romance fan. Read to support a PDX writer.
