Lord Henry ruined this book for me. I understand that he's an important character for the plot but does he really have to talk so much? Getting through this book was honestly just unpleasant because of his incessant blabbering. Also a whole chapter on perfumes, jewels and what have you? Very boring. That being said the story of this book was interesting and thought provoking and some of the descriptions and uses of language were honestly so pretty. Also if you're planning on highlighting this book I would suggest including a colour for 'that's kinda gay'

“He grew more and more enamoured of his own beauty,
more and more interested in the corruption of his own soul.”

I am in complete awe of Oscar Wilde’s eloquence and his ability to present complex reflections on society through satirical dialogue.

Wilde’s background in theatre is noticeable throughout the book, it is incredibly dialogue heavy and there isn’t much plot development. The novel focuses on human interactions and has a wealth of powerful monologues. Every time a character spoke, I was riveted; Wilde obviously had some idiosyncratic opinions on society at the time and it shows through his writing.
I don’t like to describe books in terms of how quotable they are, but it’s unavoidable in this case. Wilde has so many provocative opinions and a talent for articulating them. I was often caught off guard by how suddenly I would be drawn into deep reflection mid-paragraph.

In the future, if anyone ever asks me; “What’s one text you could experience for the first time again?”, my answer will be this one.
