I'm gladdened that my expectations for Janny Wurts weren't only met with this book but were surpassed cuz Curse Of The Mistwraith is comfortably the best first book of any fantasy series I've read. I'll endeavor to tackle one book a month from this 11-part series this year. Will be expounding on this with an extensive review later today or at the latest tomorrow. For now, let me savor the euphoria of this masterpiece of a tome I've just experienced.

The beginning was promising, but the rest of the book failed to deliver.
After the first act, I had a hard time staying engaged with the story. Ultimately, I found the book boring.
Note : speed-read from 60% to the end.

I loved the first 100 pages and the last 100 pages. The rest was rather bland. I guess I like the brothers being at odds, rather than working together. I might read the next one, but I'm not rushing to the bookstore to get it right now.

This is an awesome start to The Wars of Light and Shadow. All aspects of the is book are masterfully written from the plot to the characters and the world. This is the kind of story that casts a spell over you while you journey through its world as seen by the eyes of its characters.

This one started off on such a great foot... the world-building, the characterization of the brothers who hate each other but eventually start to find common ground, the mystery of the mistwraith itself. Then all of a sudden the mistwraith felt like a MacGuffin to kickstart a completely different story about two brothers relentlessly battling each other. And I felt like this story was way less interesting and found myself struggling through the second half when I sped quickly through the beginning. Since it seems like the rest of the series is focused on the part that bored me, I'm not sure I'll continue with the series.

Very beautifully written I just did not care about a single person or thing going on in the story

The Curse of the Mistwraith is a fantastic read. I am addicted to this authors work.
Jannys’ work invites readers to unravel its intricacies layer by layer. It challenges them to confront the darkness within the narrative, suggesting that those who venture into this world will want to remain amongst the pages. She masterfully weaves together a tapestry of suspenseful storytelling. The narrative unfolds through edge-of-your-seat plots and chilling enigmas that ensnare readers from the very first page.
This story seamlessly blends supernatural and paranormal elements. I am addicted! This series is gripping and exciting. It is a tangled web that leaves you breathless and craving more. It is filled with loss and hope, magic and danger, suspense and tension, humour and action within a world where nothing is what it seems.

This book made me realize that I like the reluctant hero trope. Well, I can only think of this book and RotE (Fitz) as examples right now. It’s intriguing because the reader sees Arithon’s internal battle with the life he is compelled to lead versus the one he wants. On the other hand, events put his brother in a corner and make him seem flat. Towards the end, Lysaer is boring and annoying and I hope he gets more nuance in future books (which seems promising considering the dynamism of other cast members). I understand why this is the case but that doesn’t keep me from rolling my eyes. I plan to continue the series slowly after I read some other books. I look forward to seeing what happens next, although I worry about 10 more books where the brothers are pitted against each other. That would get old. I know there are arcs within the series, so I hope there are other conflicts and the story explores new elements, as there appears to be plenty to expand on. The magic is pretty cool. I always appreciate when there are consequences for its use. There are rules, although I am skeptical that the sorcerers often knew how to respond to unprecedented circumstances, even if they were centuries old and powerful! Foresight is a relatively common talent. I find it interesting but also a little iffy in fantasy in case it reveals the plot too soon or conveniently resolves situations. We’ll see how it goes. Lastly, the prose is pretty unique and not something I could read if tired, anxious, or otherwise distracted. I’m not super well-versed in grammar or style terminology, but ample description and unique sentence structure/order than I commonly read give the effect of passive voice or dangling modifiers. I had to focus to maintain clarity. Another interesting experience is that I would mentally note that something had happened, and then half a page later see the thing I thought had already transpired be explicitly stated. That makes me wonder if I just jumped to conclusions while reading or if the prose regularly reinforces its points. Prepare for an active reading experience if you pick this up, but note that there are still many striking passages.
