How can a book be so cryptic and so detailed at the same time?

Man! That ending! It was bittersweet.
What if the spouse isn't who they said they were? What do you do when your spouse vanishes without explanation, leaving you with an enormous responsibility and mess to fix? When Hannah finds herself in such a scenario with only a two-word message as an instruction, she endeavors to figure out who she married and why the life of everyone she loves is at risk.
The story was suspenseful, and my opinion on Owen kept oscillating almost until the end. The execution was steady, and the characters were lovely and believable. The climax, even though not unexpected, was still heartbreaking. It was an easy, entertaining, and fast read.

This was pretty good overall. I liked the concept and the slow reveal of twists. I am looking forward to see the Apple TV adaptation and see how similar it is to the book. The ending was sooo good and yet I wanted more!

This is my first foray into a Laura Dave novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing.

Part mystery, part drama, part suspense and completely addicting. I had a difficult time putting this book down!

Hannah’s husband Owen Michael has disappeared, not before leaving his wife of 14 months a mysterious note: “Protect her.”

He’s referring to Hannah’s sixteen-year-old step-daughter, Bailey. Bailey barely tolerates Hannah, but with Owen missing, they come together to unlock this strange disappearance.

Hannah and Bailey start to discover that Owen is not who either of them thought he was and as they put together the pieces of his past, they realize a very different future lays before them.

I really enjoyed the relationship-building between step-mother and step-daughter. I found Hannah to be relatable and strong. I felt the author’s wit woven through the story as a sort of comic relief to the serious and heartbreaking elements of the plot.

I would definitely read other works by Laura Dave.
