Simply put. I want another book. I want more of this.
I could not stop thinking about this book and its plot. I just love the idea of shadows being magic and how the cabal works like a hidden conspiracy. I really like Charlie because she is not a typical FMC. She is a con artist and wow does she have some bad luck but still is so resourceful and brave. Red’s journey is quite complicated, learning more about his traumatic past was well traumatic to me. I really think he needed to be more angry at Adeline. SHE NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON. So mad she just went away. I loved that grandma comes back :) that was cute. And I specially loved seeing Red getting to know Charlie all over again and fall for her again. I really liked the very last line when Charlie thinks she finally met her match. Ugh I need more stories from this book series please

I absolutely loved this book, just as much as the first one. Charlie Hall is definitely among my favourite female main characters. The world-building is fantastic, making it so easy to get lost in the story.

I went into Thief of Night with high hopes after the way Book of Night ended. The tether between Charlie and Red, plus his lost memories, had me excited for some messy, emotional rebuilding. Unfortunately, most of that didn’t really land the way I hoped.
The first half of the book dragged. Between the modern-day references (TikTok and Instagram references kind of gave me the ick) and all the side characters with little relevance, it was hard to stay engaged. The shadow magic system is interesting but still confusing even after two books—it felt over complicated and under explored at the same time. Not sure how that's possible.
When we do focus on Charlie and Red's romance, it’s late in the game. The tether that felt so huge at the end of book one is undone almost casually, and the emotional fallout is brushed over. I wanted more of them working through the mess of his missing memories, Remy's family and the pressure put on him to take the inheritance, and the chaos that seems to follow Charlie. Instead, it all felt rushed. By the end, they burn down a mansion together and call it a day—it wasn’t the satisfying payoff I wanted.
That said, there were moments where I could see the potential of what this duology could have been: snarky, messy, morally gray characters navigating love and chaos in a world where shadows have power of their own. But ultimately, it was uneven, and I left feeling a little let down.

3rd person POV
Dual narration- Jonathan Davis & Sara Amini & Vikas Adam
Great voices. Narrated well.
This was a good listen. Definitely recommend listening/reading book 1 before this one. This one picks up where book 1 left off
Very intriguing story. No spoilers. But if you like fantasy reads I’d recommend this one!

Got an arc from work
I had high hopes for this one! Book one came to me at just the right time to absolutely infect my brain in the best way to the point that I was mad when it ended because I couldn’t linger in that world any longer. I have been champing at the bit for book two for several years now and I was admittedly worried: what if it wasn’t as good? What if it didn’t live up to the enjoyment I remember getting out of the first one?
I needn’t have worried. This was a damn good time and wrapped up better than I could’ve hoped for, even if I am sad to finally have to step out of this world permanently. This series is one of those that makes me want to be a better writer and I’m so glad to have been able to experience it.

This was a fabulous ending to this wickedly dark duology were shadows can be altered, stolen and even weaponized. Ms Black delivers another urban fantasy where the characters are morally complex, defiantly flawed and full of dark and dry humor. It was deliciously atmospheric and the world building was amazing! I do recommend that if it has been awhile since you read the first book, that you read it again. As this book pretty much starts right where the last one ended and doesn’t spend a lot of time explaining what has happened before.

I really like Charlie Hall. She is such a flawed character and she has a knack for making bad decisions, even when she is trying very hard to make the right ones. She has a very complex relationship with her family, but they had a lot to do with how her personality developed. Charlie is a con artist and a pretty good one, as well as a thief of magical objects and books. She is in way over her head in this book, but she somehow manages to make it all work in her favor.
Red/Vincent is also a very complex character. Due to what happened at the end of book one, he no longer remembers who he is or his relationship with Charlie. Red is a very dangerous and frustrated character who has some anger management issues. But I just loved his dry humor and watching him fall in love with Charlie all over again was wonderful.
The writing is of course very atmospheric, and a great blend of urban fantasy and noir. It was very dark, even when it was being a bit humorous. The banter between the characters was well done and at times was the light in all of the darkness. The pacing was pretty steady throughout the story, but did get a little slow in the middle. I really enjoyed the plot with its many layers and twists. I really enjoyed the world that was created here with the magic being based in shadows and that only a few controlled the magic.
A great ending to this duology. I really hope that we haven’t seen the end of this world though. I would enjoy more stories set in this fascinating shadow world, even if it is about totally different characters. I really do recommend that you reread, or even read for the first time the first book in this duology. This book is really dependent on your knowing what has happened before to these characters.
