I'm so disappointed. I thought I was finally going to enjoy a series from Priest, but sadly, that's not how it turned out.
The first book is the best out of the series. I would have like keeping the lighthearted, not too complicated vibes for a while. The mystery behind the cases was intriguing. But things get entirely too complicated during the second book, and not the good kind of complication. This is just the ending of that, keeping up with complicated stuff, sprinkled with unsatisfactory resolutions and convoluted connections. I don't mind immortal stuff, reincarnated destinies and all the paranormal things, I actually really dig that stuff. But it's so overly obtuse here that I enjoyed none of it, and that was already the base from the last part of the second book.
The reedeming qualities were few and far between. I'm giving it 2 starts because of the Ghost City early scene, which was fun and tense, and one of the bonus stories was actually excellent (The Mountain Spirit). Also, almost every Guo Changcheng scene helped me not get too bored out of my mind, since he's kind of a comedic relief, or some kind of unserious pacing devise that give the reader time to breathe a little.
