In many ways, this book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, especially as the conclusion to this series.
I kinda wished for more conversations between our main group of characters - this book, more so than the first two, was heavy on the descriptions and action and not much on the interactions between our group of characters; it felt like Scarlett and Albert didn’t exchange more than handful of words in this entire book.
In other ways, no other book recently made me cry as much as this one, so I obviously loved the characters enough to somewhat compensate for it.
In truth, I probably expected a bit too much from this book.
I wish we had a more firm conclusion on the Faith Houses storyline or more clarity on the characters’ future, but in true Jonathan Stroud fashion, things are left a bit ambiguous - if you’ve read other of his books and liked his conclusions, you may enjoy this one as well.

They'd left them with a cool image, the two of them strolling out of town like that. Scarlett felt it was one for the woodcut artists. One for the Wanted posters. One for the pamphleteers, too, maybe, when the story spread that far.

I can't believe it's over 😭 This was easily one of my most anticipated books EVER. I love Lockwood & Co., but Scarlett and Albert just have my whole heart, and their final exploits didn't change how much I adore them.

The grumpy x sunshine vibes. The found family energy. The heists, the travels, the chaos of it all. This one raises the stakes yet again, widening the scope of this post-apocalyptic world. Questions we've had since previous installments get answers (and some things are left open for me to wonder about forevermore). I'm so attached to these characters, and the feels here were so good. This one was darker at times than the first two, I think, but it was a natural place for the story to go.

Overall, I really love this trilogy, and I think this ending stuck the landing. I'm going to miss them forever, but that's what re-reads are for, haha! Five stars from me!

The reveal about the Ancients was disappointing
- the best part of the earlier books was seeing recognisable parts of our own society amongst the post cataclysm context
- negates any point the earlier ones were making about recognisable attitudes to climate change or WMDs

Great conclusion to a fun adventure series.
