This was kind of like Cabin in the Woods meets the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. But queer and with a dash of found family.

Overall, this book is really fun. It can get pretty preachy at times, but it doesn’t wear on me in a bad way. It’s just noticeable. I got a bit frustrated with the
monster concept. I loved the idea of invisible monsters and that it represents privilege and trickle-down economics, and how this country and the mostly white elite has prodigies off of slavery, bipoc, queer, disabled, and poor bodies. I just wish the description of the monster once it wasn’t invisible was cooler.
The amount of characters and the POV can be a bit jarring at first, but this grew on me. I also think the first half is weaker and a bit too slow for me compared to the second half.

I enjoyed this book! I loved the multiple POV from each contestant. I thought that was really clever and really well executed. I mean the team we got at the end was just unexpected but so lovable. I love Brandon and all that he is. This was a case where (unlike the last book I read, Never Lie) there was a twist that was cleverly sprinkled in before the reveal and it made the story that much more intriguing and dynamic.
The back cover tells you that this is definitely some sort of monster, but the discovery of the notebook WHICH WAS HINTED AT BEING IMPORTANT FOR A WHILE shows a twist that only enhances your feelings as a reader.
It wasn't a super deep read or anything, but I thought it was a lot of fun.

Great book, nice fast read. Only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is the map in the beginning is completely wrong, based on where things are located in relation to one another in the text. Why create a map if you can't even bother to make it right?

The concept of murderous hide & seek is always intriguing & this book was enjoyable enough. I only gave it 3 stars because it irks me when characters happen to stumble across something that spells everything out for them. It's the cliche of the villain telling the victim their master plan & ultimately ruining things for themselves because of it. Some of the characters were annoying, but that's okay because they're meant to be. The dynamic between characters is fun to see unfold & it raises the stakes to see who, if any, of them make it out alive.

My first Kiersten White book and it did not disappoint. Tense, thrilling, sad, and made me feel seen as a 20-something lgbtq+ community member and someone in the generation of people who feels scared of what the future may hold. So well written, the pacing is so good, it’s well worth reading.
