This was a perfect summer witch story! I loved everything about this book-humor, friendship, discovery, magic-all of it!

How does one review a book that has it all? I went into this expecting friendship, summer vibes, magic, and body positivity, but it was all that and so much more! From representation of anxiety, to tackling issues like colonisation and repression, death of a family member, gay and NB rep, self-doubt to self-belief and building each other up, to humor and beautiful relationships. It was a breezy read, made me laugh often, and had me hooked from start to finish. I would quite honestly recommend this book to everyone I know!

✨ 3.5 STARS ✨

the first half of this book was incredibly difficult for me to get through but the second half was a lot more enjoyable. though i almost marked this as dnf, i am glad i powered through and finished this book.

the story follows thrash, a plus sized teen witch, as she joins another trio of teen witches on a chaotic roadtrip to try and steal their magical gifts.

i loove a book with a detailed background, so i really appreciated the map and the history of the thirteen states and how they related to the history of the united states. i also really enjoyed the characters and their stories and individualism, and how they all meshed together. i thought it was an interesting story of teen girls just having a fun time and finding themselves.

This was pretty cute, but my interested wasn't captured like it was with other reads. I was super excited to read this, and Thrash was relatable and also admirable in her views of herself, and it made me want to keep cheering for her. Unfortunately, I wasn't as taken as I thought I would be. I do, however, find myself excited to read this author's future works!

Cute story. I didn’t really connect with any of the characters, but it was a quite an adventure. There were a lot of unanswered questions which leads me to believe this is the beginning of a series. If not, what a pity.

Thrash kinda dreads reaching the age where she will receive her witchy Gift: her mother Osmarra is a powerful Glamour witch who expects Thrash to embrace the same gift, but Thrash is perfectly happy being her fat, dyed-hair, rebellious self and would rather have a more useful Gift. An accidental mishap reveals that Thrash has a powerful natural magic, but instead of going through the Gift ceremony, she decides to join the Lunes, a trio of "cool" girls, on their road trip to claim their own Gifts instead.

This rollicking road-trip/coming-of-age story offers a different take on witchcraft, with a tradition that focuses on three key Gifts (Glamour, Growth, and Sight) and elides the natural witchy gifts as well as the appropriation of various Indigenous traditions. So while there's a fun adventure and plenty of character development and drama in the book, it also addresses some more serious issues. I appreciated that the book didn't focus solely on Thrash: each of her companions (Cresca, Saki, and Emerald) had backgrounds and personalities and goals that deserved equal attention and made them a more believable team. An enjoyable read.

Thank you, Sword and Rose Press and NetGalley, for providing an eARC of this book. Opinions expressed here are solely my own.
