Kind of narratively wonky, and it's unfortunate that the ending sequel baits as hard as it does. I feel comfortable stating that neanderthals probably did not have high-powered ancestral memory as described here.
Really engrossed me as it went along, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't really feel something at a few parts. Nice coming of age story, in a way.
There's a part here that basically amounts to neanderthal lawyering which really wowed me. Made excellent use of some concepts previously set up, and was just very cleanly executed on the whole.
Accruate or not, I deeply enjoy the idea that part of the reason neanderthals died out was because their gender roles were too rigid.
Broud can choke, and Brun can too for enabling him.

Quite enjoyed the slower simplicity of this. A good level of world building, and an interesting concept. I think the ending was fitting, and now just need to decide if I continue with the 4 in the rest of the series!

I first read this book a very long time ago. Jr High maybe. I read through the whole series and anxiously awaited the next book. 9 years it took the author to get the next one and when I discovered there was another one coming, I decided to wait her out until she finished the series. So, more than 25 years after I began the series, I began it again. I don't think I would recommend it for a middle schooler, mostly because it contains sexual violence. It is a definite page turner however and I am enjoying the read.
