Had a lot of fun with this one! Loved the
murder
mystery escape room plot of this book. And I liked having Gideon's view on everything that happened.

Few too many contemporary earth memes for my taste, considering that this is like, the space future. But that can be overlooked.
All in all I had fun!

I'm still recovering from the
emotional damage
of that ending so this isn't going to be my best work.

Muir's world-building is very interesting in that she has clearly worked hard to create a detailed world with internal consistency ...but she doesn't see fit to share that with us. I spent a good three quarters of the book very confused and honestly struggled to continue in parts (confusing, very descriptive heavy, one character disappears for days leaving the other wandering around confused herself). Then the ending hit me like a punch to the face.

If you can get through about 350 pages, all the action and exposition happens in the last 80 pages or so.

Super dark, very graphic gory.
Some pretty incredible fight scenes and one liners.

5/10 would recommend

I found this hard to get into, but I really enjoyed it by the end. Part of the reason I found it hard to get into was that there wasn't much explanation at the start about what the heck was going on; imagine my shock when I finished the book and found a whole glossary at the back, alongside heaps of other info (including how to pronounce characters' names). So, if you have a physical copy, consider turning to page 445 onwards for that (there aren't any spoilers from there onwards, but make sure you don't read page 444!).

On that note, I agree with other reviews that it was really hard to remember who was who, with all the characters using a mix of first names, last names, titles, and nicknames!

I did not love the beginning as I found it a bit too complicated and difficult to follow. I kept getting confused by random facts about the planets just being thrown in without any explanation. That being said, the longer the book went on, I started liking it a lot more. Over time, I got a bit more used to the environment and overall story line. The characters are amazing and the story actually got really exciting at the end. Definitely worth a read if you can get through the beginning.
