An enjoyable read overall, but I think that the author didn’t exactly succeed in doing what she wanted to do. There are some really interesting world building elements that just aren’t explored but would have added greatly to the book. I’m told the world building is more fleshed out in the second book, but we’ll see.

Additionally, I started out not caring for Gideon – I feel like the author simple gave me no reason to like her other than witty sarcasm (which I love, but doesn’t make for a compelling character on its own).  Eventually, I was too drawn into the plot/mystery of the book to put it down just because I disliked the main character.

Overall, I’m glad I finished the book and have even started the second one, but I think the hype around this book is more than it deserves.

Holy Hell.
What an incredible book.
It’s witty, it’s dark, it’s bloody and I’m absolutely in love.
It was made even better with Moira Quirk lending voice to this dynamic story.
I will treasure this first read forever.

LGBT necromantic sci-fi is really all I need to say, but I'll go one step further. Gideon the Ninth is a rambunctious, badass murder mystery that drops you into its world with little explanation. I was forced to puzzle out much of GtN's setting for half of the book, which admittedly left me confused much of the time, but once I was in, I was IN. Charismatic characters, especially in the irreverent, sarcastic Gideon. Rich necromancy-based magic systems. Action-packed swordplay and magic fights. I laughed, I grieved, I was chilled to the bone, I had a blast.
