Lindo livro sobre uma terra e uma época com pouquíssima literatura de fácil acesso fora da Africa. É lindo viajar pela pureza e a riqueza das tradições do Quênia pré-primeira guerra, mas extremamente triste "testemunhar" a destruição e remoção de terras executada pelos ingleses.
Este livro serve como um ótimo relato de como culturas riquíssimas da África, Ásia e Américas foram dizimadas quando europeus decidiram brincar de dividir o mundo entre eles e "civilizar" os "selvagens".

These stories about growing up in Kenya in the 1940s and 50s are vivid, providing a glimpse into what daily life coming of age during an independence movement looked like. I loved the little details about the author’s family and since this focuses solely on his childhood, these relationships aren’t put in an adult perspective. It definitely makes me want to read Ngugi’s other memoirs!

Eu já conhecia o escritor - havia lido um pequeno ensaio dele durante meu doutorado, mas não imaginava que sua escrita fosse tão profunda, tão contundente. Não estranha que seu nome seja indicado para o prêmio Nobel de Literatura, faz todo sentido. É muito tocante ver como se dão as relações familiares em culturas tão distantes da minha, e é duro perceber como relações coloniais moldam uma vida inteira, e como pactos entre uma mãe e seu filho o permitem "sonhar em tempos de guerra". Amei!!

Boníssim!
Una lectura recomanadíssima, no només per qui l'escriu sinó per tot el que s'aprèn de Kenya. Clama al cel les injustícies comeses en aquest país i la resta d'estats africans, i veure-ho des de la perspectiva d'un nen...esgarrifa.

This book was well written and informative, but for some reason I had a hard time getting into it / invested in the characters and things that were happening. Wouldn't really recommend unless you have special interest in Kenya during this time period.
