My mama say education will give me a voice. I want more than a voice... I want a louding voice.

This amazing story is told through the voice of a young Nigerian woman, Adunni, who is determined to receive an education and choose her own future. Although neither are traditional options for impoverished girls in the small villages of Nigeria, Adunni persists.

Her journey is long and heartbreaking. Adunni's mother - her champion for education - passes away when Adunni is still a girl. But it's the memory of her mother who keeps her strong and propels her onward. I loved Adunni, who endures heartbreaking tragedy and treatment at the hands of others. But she doesn't give up in spite of insurmountable odds. She is courageous and compelling in her search for a better life.

Abi Dare is an amazing new voice in telling stories that need to be told - and heard. Her writing is beautiful, her characters deep and varied. She gives Adunni a voice like no other you've read and I wanted to scoop Adunni up into a giant bear hug as she fought for herself and her future.

Thank you Dutton books for the free copy in exchange for a fair review. I absolutely loved it!

I tried not to binge this story. I failed, but Daré didn’t.
This is a story that will set up a megaphone inside your heart so that, even if you close the book, Adunni will not be done with you. 10/10 recommend.

Loved this book! The way Daré writes with such honesty and vulnerability in this book was SO good! It was so refreshing to read about a culture that I am not super familiar with and learn the hardships that so many people face around the world everyday.

Adunni inspired me so much throughout the book, never giving up and continuing to go after her dreams no matter what or who tried to bring her down. I loved the relationship that developed between Mrs Tia and Adunni who saw the potential in each other and lifted each other up!

I would recommend this to anyone who wants an important read but also something that challenges you to step out of your comfort zone
