A fun read with quirky world- and character-building. The storyline was alright but the characters stood out, as well as the prose, which was well-crafted and full of unique imagery. Like, the author will start a chapter taking about an object, and then use that as a metaphor for the current situation. I didn't like the more extensive philosophizing sections, and I thought the interludes didn't add much to the book. Overall, based on this, I'd read more Tim Robbins.

i typically avoid male authors because they always make unnecessary sexual comments and this is a good example of that

i also wasnt very into portraying hawaii and some exotic land for white people to come and vacation to, that aspect made this book feel very dated to me

the writing was also too self referential and it took me out of the story multiple times
funny fast-paced

They really must begin allowing half-stars, I have such a difficult time picking a rating. I say three and a half stars. Maybe even four. But my gut instinct says no to four, even if I thought the read was precious. Maybe thats why, too precious.

A sweet, over-the-top story where every sentence is snappy. Can you dock points for the writing being too snappy? I did. The only other Robbins book I've read all the way through was Jitterbug Perfume and I can see the emergence of wacky love-story forumla. Which isn't to say that it didn't sweep me off my feet occasionally. I found Jitterbug Perfume to be slow to start, but Still Life with Woodpecker was solid all the way through.

There is a lot of sex, which is actually quite fun to read.

I believe there is a sentence on the back about "Tom Robbins writes like Dolly Parton looks" or something to that effect. Its totally right.

Tom Robbins is weird
