I love the Nausicaa movie and I went into this book expecting more of the same, but the manga is so much more dense and complex. Princess Kushana was a fairly one-note invader in the movie, but in the manga she’s a conflicted strategist fighting both an external war and a struggle to survive the intrigues of her family. She becomes an interesting foil to Nausicaa’s earnest Chosen One: both fighting to preserve and lead their homelands, but through very different methods. We also get to see more of the beliefs and motivations of the other cultures neighboring Nausicaa’s valley.

My only complaint isn’t even really against the book at all but more with manga as a whole, and it’s that this work deserves to be in full color. The wildlife, the ships, the clouds, the toxic forest, everything is so incredibly detailed that black&white just doesn’t fully do it justice.

"I can hear a voice in my heart, all the time. Go forward, it tells me. So all I think of now is of going forward, as far as I am able."

I love this girl. An action packed epic with this gentle girl going bravely into battle. Kick ass heroines who lack softness or compassion are not interesting to me. Neither are their male counterparts. But Nausicaä, the Chosen One as it were, is a gentle soul. So gentle that other characters fear she might be destroyed. But does this quality diminish her ability to fight or lead? It doesn't. And that's what makes her so extraordinary. Miyazaki claimed he didn't have talent for graphic novels, which is a boldfaced lie. The artwork is stunning, down to every minute detail. Some of the action was confusing to me, I found it slightly difficult to keep track of all the names, but it's a deeply compelling bit of work. Just beautiful.

"Does...does she mean to...protect the whole world by herself...? My Nausicaä..."

An amazing manga series, with Miyazaki doing an amazing job of world-building, while working in an intriguing plot as a Princess tries to hold her city together even as mysterious elements try to restore a planet's ecological balance. Equally interesting is the essay by Miyazaki at the back of the book, about how the inspiration for Nausicaa came from a character from The Odyssey.

Born in the middle of the second world war, Miyazaki was trying to tell here a far more horrific war, where the most of the worlds ecosystem has been destroyed.

If you have only watched Miyazaki movies like me, I would definitely recommend to read it.

Very much the beginning of a larger story. Appreciate not a ton of info dumping but instead simple ideas of the setting are made clear through the story.

Beautiful art and storytelling. I loved the movie and so this is basically the same plot, though I've heard the later volumes go more into the themes of the story than the movie. I'm excited.
