An interesting view of society. In some ways, an indictment of those who fail to be self-actualized in the spirit of Ayn Rand; in others a reproof of the laid-off as lazy and unions as a shield to the shiftless.
In my opinion, those who, over the years, have found this to be a good short way of reminding others to think for themselves have also missed the point. If you are telling someone that they need to solve a given problem for themselves, you have already had to assist them (not a Garcia). All in all, a missive that serves primarily to remind those who strive to continue striving and that their work is worthwhile no matter how many they have to drag, kicking or in repose, with them.

I think A Message to Garcia is a noble message. I understand (and practice) the general concept of quietly accepting your work, doing it, and completing it with no guidance. Maybe in some industries it applies better than others. Where a questioning attitude is cultivated, or it is required to understand something 3 questions deep, this really can't apply. Where the task is well within the knowledge and capability of an individual and no additional input SHOULD be required, this applies. So I only gave it 2 stars, because I appreciated the message, but for me it was one dimensional. The higher message is the takeaway, don't make it literal.

It's worth it just for Lincoln's letter to GEN Hooker, lol.

Quick little read published by Lamplighter. The title article A Message to Garcia was excellent. The pamphlets on the Roycroft School for Boys was interesting but nothing profound. It did make me realize how lacking our modern school system (whether public, private, or home) are severely lacking in what Hubbard states is “the first, last, and one great lesson we must all learn- that success lies in Doing Something for Somebody. Non-productive effort, getting ready to do something useful, isn't nearly so good as to be useful right now." Of course Hubbard is grossly missing any emphasis on God and devotion to Him.
