This book was UNHINGED. For a book that I knew the plot to, this was wayyy wilder than I expected. This gave me all of the nostalgia of re-reading Twilight while also feeling like a different story. Edward planning murders and reading everyone’s thoughts was hysterical. Don’t even get me started on the police chase when he is racing to save Bella. And the audiobook narrator!!!! That man was acting for his life!

A solid three. Of course, I haven't read the main books of the Twilight Saga since I was a young teenager over a decade ago, but it was still kinda fun to read Twilight from Edward's POV. Nice to see him get some kind of personality even if his personality left a lot to be desired. I've never been a fan of the "tortured brooding soul" guys and oh boy is Edward that trope.

The majority of Midnight Sun was an entertaining read due to the benefit of being written from the perspective of a 100+ year old vampire who can read minds rather than being written from the perspective of a teenager. This offered the reader insight into the history and nature of the vampires of this world as well as the inner monologues and perspectives of the story's supporting characters. Unfortunately, the last quarter of the book gets bogged down in explaining various logistics (including WAY too much description of traffic and driving).

That being said, if you are a fan of Twilight you'll find a good portion of this book interesting and it serves as a reminder that the movies actually made several substantial changes. Additionaly, this version helps to make the beginning of the central love story feel more organic than the film or original first book.

Perhaps if the original series was written from Edward's perspective, thus allowing for more mature themes and world-building, the Twilight series migh've stood a better chance at being taken a bit more seriously with fans of supernatural genres.
