This was a good book in my opinion.  It felt different than some of the other copy-paste romantasy books I've read.  I enjoyed the world building and the romance.  I enjoyed the Obeah creatures and how sassy a certain one of them was.  The ending left on a cliffhanger but it just left me eager to continue when I could get my hands on the next book.

I would buy the book for my bookshelf.

I loved everything about this book. The plot is so interesting and following the two sisters in their journey was so fun! The mythology was different and the plot twists kept me super engaged. I love Lettle and Yeeran. They are different but their loyalty to each other and their loved ones is precious 🄹. Also, Pila is such a diva LOL she’s hilarious. I’m so glad Tessa told me to read this bookšŸ«¶šŸ¾.

2,75 āļø honestly the romance felt forced and unnecessary it didn’t fit into the story well the book felt rushed. It was predictable none of characters did I enjoy at all

Wow! This was like a breath of fresh air for the romantasy genre. The plot was 90% immersive world building with a unique magic system, political maneuvering, immensely diverse and fleshed out characters with maybe 10% spice/romance which is my personal preference. Lettle was incredibly emotionally immature for 28 and at times grating but the rest of the characters more than made up for that. Will come back to this world again and again throughout time.

- There is a lot of grimness at the start. You're hit with child soldiers, starvation, poverty, bloated corpses, gutting animals, extinction and over-explotaion of resources in like the first 30 pages. I was reading this on a beach holiday and I was thinking Christ this is a bit much. Not the vibe I was expecting.
- That being said the vegetarian, hippy fae seem based honestly.
- I liked the internal conflict of Yeeran. Wanting to end the poverty and hunger, believing and her Chieftan and the war would be the solve for this, while also not really believing this. On top of being in love with Salawa.
- Felt Rayan was underdeveloped. He's there for Lettle to be annoyed at and for
the twist later on. Even when he gets his revenge it feels very hollow.

- Why is Komi there? No but why.
He's not really the scheamer behind anything. He's literally just a drunk that wanders into some scenes. It's also the least surprising twist.

- Lettle was my favourite character. I think she was a very good mirror for Yeeran. I wish she got better villains to overcome in the book.
- I liked the world. The three gods, three people's each with a different form of magic.
- In particular the prophesies were very cool.
- On the romance side of things could really take it or leave it. I'm not sure I really buy Furi
getting over her brother's death that easily to sleep with his killer. Hayden and Lettle felt both stunted and too drawn out. I think because of the underdevelopment.

I don't think I'd seek out the next book, but if it was on the table I'd pick it up and read it.

DID NOT FINISH: 31%

i haven’t read fourth wing but it feels like it’s very similar. i’m here for a fantasy world not the weirdly forced romantic tension that was not compelling at all

2.5 Stars

Pros: Really fun world building with tangible magic, political and eco-systems. Queer and Afro/Arab world. Strong and varied female protagonists (who are in their late twenties to mid thirties!!! Mega slay)

**I loved how much bioluminescent fauna/flora there is. Super pretty to imagine.

Cons:
It just drags after the initial set up, not much happens until the last couple of chapters. The romance was hollow and weirdly paced for both couples, they go from enemies to lovers in a matter of seconds without much reason to.

Predictable plot with way too much spoon feeding.

Overall:
Fun but drags a bit. Mixed feelings.
