This is a very dynamic book, both the characters and the plot. I knew it to be a Romeo and Juliet retelling in China between gangs. What I didn’t realize before reading it was how much of it revolves around an outbreak. That part of the book feels very fantastical. I also really liked that Roma and Juliet were older and had past history set before the book.

Probably one of my favorite settings in a book to date. Chloe Gong beautifully sets up 1920s Shanghai and masterfully mixes the fantasy elements with the old Hollywood glamour of lights and fashion and sets the scene between two rivalling gangs wrapped up in hate and blood feuds. (I also loved the tongue in cheek references to the original Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet.)
