The relationship between Juliette and Roma does not have much buildup in the book, rather it relies completely on what happened 4 years prior which we only get slight snippets of, but not enough to make me care for the characters.
We are told they're in love but not really shown.
Because of that their relationship falls quite flat.
Juliette's character also relies heavily on the implication that she is ruthless and has a reputation, but I wish the author let her be more violent and unhinged throughout the book. Especially during her fights.

It felt good reading a good book again… but whilst this is a good book it’s not exactly what I’d call 5/5 great.

The book pacing is slow…. (Almost off-puttingly slow). Whist I understand the reasons for this slow pace, nothing new really happened until about half way through the book. The reader finds out the “conflict” in this book in the prolog and we have to spend almost 200 pages before the characters know what is going on…

The romance was also lacklustre, for this to be a Romeo and Juliet retelling you expect this tragic epic love story of starcrossed lovers and you don’t really get that shown to you by how the characters act… it’s more told they love each other and you have to accept it as fact..

It was a unique retake on the retelling but some aspects fell flat…

Still enjoyed the book!

This was a solid four star book for me
I didn’t love the premise as the descriptions were pretty gross and I don’t love reading about pandemics in the middle of 2 lol but overall I enjoyed this
It was super fast paced especially once you got a quarter or halfway through and I got more invested than I expected to
I’m immediately going to start These Violent Ends but idk if I’m going to read the next ones that come out (and definitely not going to buy them like I did with the duology) as I’m not obsessed and also I don’t love some of the stuff Chloe Gong has done (especially when it came to blurbing and supporting problematic books and then not making any kind of statement or anything about it to apologize in any way
