Betrayal

Harold Pinter

3.81 AVERAGE

I really like the stage adaptation at the Harold Pinter Theatre (Oct 10), but if solely reading the text, this one is a bit dull. Moving on to his other plays.

Update, 2019: Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton and Charlie Cox are brilliant (adaptation at Harold Pinter Theatre, 2019). A whirlwind of emotions. It's so much better on stage, characters are hued.

Excellently written. This play let's you feel all the emotions of betrayal, jealousy, pain, sadness and acceptance. How do the characters cope with the hurt they have inflicted? With the lies they have told? How does this beginning (and this ending) set up the rest of their lives? Would definitely recommend!

A very quick read. I enjoyed it. It was simple but interesting. I do wish more happened, but maybe a lot rests on seeing it performed.

3.5. The structure here is much more interesting than the story itself. Very Pinter-y in the conversation style, although this is much more realistic than his earlier work. Maybe if I saw it played I'd be more invested in the story. Very well-executed overall, though.

I'm not a big fan of reading plays (and particularly not more modern ones..I like 18th C and 19th C--Oscar Wilde) more...but I LOVE this play by Pinter. One of my all-time favorite reads from college coursework.

Honestly, one of the better plays I've read in the romance-drama genre. Maybe because it doesn't belong to the genre as much as it's just talking about the genre? Makes sense that this is a classic because I thoroughly enjoyed it and Pinter did a wonderful job with the non linearity of things!
