I love this series. It's fun, adventurous, and has all the fantasy elements I love so much rooted in a real-world feel. I've reread this book multiple times. Note: the main character is Indigenous/White. The author is a white woman. I am also a white woman. Fwiw: I believe she wrote with respect and cultural awareness without portraying certain dimensions of living as an Indigenous person that aren't her truths to tell. It is a hard line to tread. Indigenous people and cultures are portrayed in a positive manner throughout the series, while avoiding the fetishization or exotification you often see. As the series goes on, she weaves in more knowledge of the Indigenous lands and cultures involved in, I feel, an appropriate manner, and you learn more and more about the MC's heritage. The Indigenous characters are on the same level as all other characters: Lots of sexy, attractive, powerful, magical people, with varying degrees of competency and badassery, of multiple races and species. No group gets better or worse treatment than others, both in character development and in story.

Entertaining but not great. I also got really excited at the beginning because I love stories of adults adopting kids into a found family, but that hope was shot down quickly and abruptly.
