Greatly enjoyed this book. It had all the elements that usually annoy me about urban fantasy, but surprise surprise, I was not annoyed. I hope this doesn't turn out to have an annoying love triangle, but I will read the next book at least.
Rated 4 stars because there was no sexytimes. Booooo

Great start to my new obsessive series. Cannot wait to read more!!!

I’ve been on kind of an urban fantasy kick recently, and this book has been sitting around collecting dust on my bookshelf for over a decade at this point. In general, I tend to prefer high fantasy to urban fantasy so this never made it out of my TBR pile until now. It’s a book that I always meant to read but just never seemed to get around to. After discovering and falling in love with Annette Marie’s Guild Codex series last year, I’ve been much more interested in urban fantasy, so I finally decided to pick up Moon Called. I’m really glad that I did!

While I didn’t enjoy this book nearly as much as the Guild Codex, it was still a really fun and entertaining read! I liked Mercy a lot and found her to be a very interesting, sympathetic character. Her status as a “walker” who can shapeshift into a coyote was very intriguing compared to the more typical werewolf shifters. I’m not usually a fan of werewolf or shifter fiction, mostly because omegaverse really isn’t my thing and it seems to show up quite a bit in these types of books. Luckily, there wasn’t any of that in this book.

This book has some pretty strong mid to late 2000s vibes, which I personally love. It just makes me very nostalgic for my high school days. And, though I wasn’t blown away by it, Moon Called had me hooked pretty much from the get go. I was especially drawn to Mercy as the protagonist and was intrigued by her unique personal circumstances.

The way the book started out, with Mercy taking in a young, stray, newly turned werewolf in trouble and allowing him to work part time in her garage just really caught my interest for some reason. I guess it didn’t feel like the typical beginning to these types of stories and it made me curious to learn more about Mac and also about Mercy herself.

The book had an interesting, though occasionally mildly convoluted, plot. The author is obviously setting up a love triangle in this one as well, although there wasn’t a lot of romance involved in this particular book. I’m not usually a big fan of love triangles, but I’m curious to see how this one progresses. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Samuel so far, but I am intrigued by Adam. Hopefully, there is more direct interaction between him and Mercy in the next book.

Overall, I thought the plot was very interesting and fairly medium paced. There wasn’t quite a bit of set up and world building in this first book, which I’m fine with in a longer series like this. It did a good job establishing the characters and the world they live in. This is all pretty standard fair for urban fantasy type settings, nothing groundbreaking, but I still really enjoyed spending time spent in this world.

My favorite thing about it so far is Mercy herself. She’s the perfect balance of tough and independent but also kind and caring. I also thought it was really cool and unique that Mercy is a car mechanic (thank god she’s not another assassin, bounty hunter, private detective or cop). I’m really curious to see how Mercy’s character develops throughout the series and excited to learn more about what it means for her to be a walker. It seems like there is a lot that even Mercy doesn’t know about herself and her abilities and I really hope that gets explored more in later books.

Overall, this was a good book on its own but it especially did a good job as an intriguing set up for the larger series. It definitely got my attention and has me eager to read more about Mercy Thompson and her adventures. I’d absolutely recommend this to fans of urban fantasy!
