I loved this series. I was a little wary going into it because the whole borderline-porn romance theme that vampires and werewolves have obtained isn't something I'm into. I was vindicated of all worry, though, as this turned out to be something much more interesting.
Mercy is a romance/gun shy auto mechanic that also happens to be able to turn into a coyote. She doesn't have much mystical power other than that. She knows to stay out of the way of werewolves, since she doesn't feel the pack need to obey when they bark orders, it leads to... interesting confrontations.
Right off the bat it's clear that she's a lot of fun. Whether it's the cat without a tail that claimed her or the parts rabbit in her back yard that she dismantles systematically to aggravate the OCD werewolf that lives behind her.
Patricia Briggs can in some cases be a little too transparent in her writing but overall, she paces it nicely, gives explanation, conversation and doses of humor to keep it lively.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the Mercy Thompson novels and eagerly await the next in the series.

Despite having to roll my eyes at some of the staples of urban fantasy, surprised at how much I actually did enjoy this again. The men in her life may mostly piss me off but I DO like Mercy as a character. Mostly.

Let's jump in,
The attitude towards poc is overall trying to be good but is sooooo 2006 and def wouldn't pass today
The I have no female friends and they have an automatic animosity towards me
The lack of female characters in general
The alpha male ness
These characteristics are all very common in urban fantasy from the early 2000s and aren't enough to make me hate a book. Sure I'll cringe sure I'll say yikes but I know what I'm getting.
But this book was full of so many other things. The writing was fast and engaging so there's the good but between the plot that hops all over the place and is entirely contrived, the extreme tell not show, and the Character inconsistencies had me reading fast to get it over with
Imma probably read the sequel tho lol

This urban fantasy novel follows Mercy Thompson, a coyote shape-shifter who's relative mundane and calm life gets upended when she takes in a scraggly teenage boy who smells of werewolf.
I love the way this author presents bits and pieces of not only character backstory, but also the history of Mercy Thompson's world as the plot unfolds. This book felt like a trail of breadcrumbs, and each crumb I picked up was a neat new piece of information to add to the collage.
My only complaint is that I'm worried that an underlying romantic plot line is leading up to a love triangle, and I usually don't care for those.
