A fun romp through a nicely complicated world of supernaturals and humans.
i know i'm in the minority when it comes to this book but i just could not get into it.
i don't like mercy. i found her boring and annoying.
and i felt the author did too much explaining after the fact rather that have the reader experience events in real time.

Good strong start. Spends a lot of time on character development, but that's to be expected. I really like how she builds the universe.
It's actually a 3.5
I enjoyed the book. It's linear, not overcomplicated, but the setting is great. I like the main character and the 'bad guys' are not stereotypes. I think I'll move on with the series

Okay the book was great blah blah blah but what the hell is the cover art??? It makes it look like a free smut book with a heroine that belongs in a motorcycle gang. There was only one kiss in the whole book! And at no point did Mercy tie up her shirt. Terrible.
I am actually doing a reread of this series (+ Alpha & Omega), but I haven't read it in some years now. And I have a different perspective now than I once did, as well as some things that I remember, or left an impression with me that lasted all these years. One of the things I wanted to pay attention to, on my reread, was, sadly, how often rape was mentioned. I remember that being a reoccuring topic in these books. And that isn't the kind of thing I think should be used repeatedly, or lightly.
Rape was mentioned in this book more than once, from or about different characters even. Some was literal and some was figurative. And there were repeated allusions to possible sexual assault of a minor in this book as well. The author uses the topic of rape too much (I know some of what is coming, which allows me to say that I KNOW there are more entries in later stories, plural, of this series that include it).
I do still enjoy the characters and the direction the story is otherwise taking, but I have reservations, because I know of two entries in this series that aren't good. I know I will have to force myself to get through them. And that isn't even related to the frequent and repeated use of rape in these books. I am going to continue my reread, but with an open mind for what does and doesn't work for me at THIS stage of my life. If you find repeated reference to rape triggering, I would warn you off this series. It gets much worse than this entry. The early parts of Alpha and Omega are heavy, and so is one of the later books in the Mercy Thompson series (and I am not remembering everything, just the most eggregious parts, years after reading them the first time).

I really loved this book! I picked it up after finishing the Kate Daniels series, as I was looking for something to scratch a similar itch, and I'm glad I did. There is a love triangle in this series, which I don't usually like, but honestly it's not really obtrusive, and I think it's done really well. I like Adam more though...
And so I come to the world of Mercy Thompson. I've been told I need to get into this series for a while now. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I didn't *love* it. The world, I feel, needs a bit more fleshing out, but with this being the first book I'm willing to bet it will get more fleshed out later in the series. I like Mercy's character so far and I do hope we get to see more Walker/Native American lore because that's what I feel sets this series apart from other popular urban fantasy.
