It's a lot of characters to keep up with and a lot of things happening all at once, but overall a really fun intro to the world

The cover art is awful, but the story and world building are pretty good!

“Happiness is German engineering, Italian cooking, and Belgian chocolate.”

Firts time I read this book, I ended up DNFing it, now I enjoyed it more this time around! It's not all perfect, but I have some hopes for this series, so hopefully the sequels will get even better. RTC.

Is it bad.. no
Is it good.. I just can't decide.

There are elements in this book that are great, and I did read two more books in the series immediately after because I enjoyed the overall story. But I'm going to stop there, mainly because I don't like Mercy. There are spoilers for the first three books in the spoiler link below, to explain why I dislike her. But for non spoiler stuff - she has very little personality in my opinion.

Spoiler So every book basically adds a new love interest for Mercy to make no decisions about. We are told in the first book that Adam is hot and they have chemistry but no sex kind of relationship. It's pretty obvious that Adam and her are going to happen at some point and are in all likelihood end game. But then Adam is injured and Mercy takes him to the pack that raised her so there's a stronger alpha who can help him not go crazy while he heals. (side note, Adams kid has been kidnapped and in any other series, you'd see her take Adam to get healed up but then actually take action while he's there getting all healed and she'd start to track down the missing child and stuff. Not just sit there all in her feelings). But while there we discover that she has another love interest, named Samuel who basically groomed her when she was a teen and he was thousands of years old (eww). Then Samuels dad (who is the dude who raised Mercy) tells her that despite Sam being a predator who wants Mercy just cuz she can have his babies, Sams wolf mated Mercy so Mercy is gonna have to deal with this creep. Then Sam goes home with Mercy and Adam and they start actually looking for this missing kid.

So now the beginning of the second book, we have Sam and Adam basically fighting over Mercy with her just sitting there as if she has no power in this situation. And we find out that Stefan, her vampire friend, is also head over heels for Mercy and Mercy is like oh no but I'm just going to avoid it.

Then the third book happens and her inner dialogue is all just about how she loves both Sam and Adam but everyone else is telling her she needs to pick. Then she gets raped by the bad guy and is all worried that Adam is gonna run but he's a good guy so he tells her she's his and she can't run anymore... I don't know, I just fucking hate a main character with no sense of agency (especially when she's constantly talking about how she has agency but doesn't actually use it at any point except at the end when she has to somehow get involved in the drama of the book and has to save everyone despite it never being skill on her part and always just cuz she has other people who can tell her what to do).
Spoiler

In short, Mercy is just not my kind of character but for people who enjoy this series or who aren't turned off from a needy, no agency female lead.
