3.5 stars. This was a difficult read for me. The main character Macy Cashmere is disturbed.. but is she really disturbed or did life’s circumstances force her to act the way she does? I’m leaning towards the latter.
Macy’s life is hard, tragic and heartbreaking. To think that for some people her life is normal, well it made me out down the book pretty often. It’s so different from my own childhood. Which made me feel grateful and then really sad.
As a YA books it is definitely gritty and dark. The chapters are short, the writing style is unique (but if you are a stickler for grammar and spelling - you will be bothered) overall it’s a story that I won’t forget.

I read this book 2 or 3 years ago and to this day I always think about it. It talks about everything and doesn’t shy away from sexual topics. It’s easy to sympathize with the character while also recognizing this is not the way a humans life is supposed to go. This book really changes things for me and was one of the first books to ever make me cry.
The author doesn't shy away from the hunger, sexual violence, physical violence, vomit or stress of the ghetto--but neither does she hesitate to make her heroine smart, loyal and fierce. Graphic, but great discussion material here.
Rating this 5 now because I know I'll be thinking about this book for many moons
Truly eye opening and heartbreaking. Loved the format it’s written in and how it tells such a strong story with such vulnerability. Plus such metaphors -WoW! A must read for any teen or higher. Definitely adult themes that the teenager is dealing with and a reminder of how truly tough life is for so many of our students

I don't even know where to start with this. This is a book that I bought a couple of months ago and has been on the top of my TBR for a while. I finally got around to reading this and im just so disappointed. I read the blurb and thought it sounded really interesting but to be honest it was just a really underwhelming read. I understand that this book deals with some very strong subjects about abuse and neglect, and I understand why Macy is the way she is but this book didnt make me relate to Macy in anyway in fact I found her annoying after a while. I was good for like the first 120 pages and then i realised that i wasn't getting through the book because i was fine with putting it down so i could do just about anything else. There were a couple of pages that really hit me in a great emotional way, but they were few and far between. I got to page like 200 and something and the chapter "I don't want to talk about it" came up and to be honest by the time I hit that chapter I couldn't remember the story line that references it earlier in the book. Overall this clever concept fell short for me just because it moved so slowly and it was only a 330 page book.
