Read for MLIS elective

This destroyed me in the best of ways, I don't know if I can write a coherent review.

Wish a certain character hadn't been redeemed so early/easily though. I don't care that they're family, what this person did was FAR more unforgivable. (Then again I hold epic grudges.)

THIS BOOK COMPLETELY BROKE ME.
In this YA contemporary, coming of age story we follow Moon Fuentez as she is finding herself and her way out of her toxic home. This book is all about Moon's journey, navigating her trauma, learning her worth, and being open to the idea of others being capable of loving and caring for her.

I think this was a beautifully written book. The author has done a great job of showing her culture. I enjoyed reading the book even though it had a lot of drama and a lot of trauma mentioned. The humor of the characters broke a lot of the tension without dismissing the pain of the characters. I think it related to me personally because I use humor as a way to deal with traumatic events. It also does a great job of showing the Narcissistic parent and how they treat the golden child as well as the scapegoat child. And how neither are really truly loved.  It has a slow burn enemies to lovers. Mainly the book is about a self love journey and how to jump out of your shell even if you could lose everything.

I thought the language is this book was really beautiful and the way the author describes scenes made you melt into them.

In the beginning, the Santiago and Moon relationship and 'nemesis' aspect in particualr seemed a bit forced and sometimes it was annoying to read.

Parts of this book read straight like a wattpad fanfiction- so if thats what you're into go for it- but still managed to weave in plots with deeper meanings than what they let on.

About the main relationship, I have a few thoughts.
Santiago in the beginning was so annoyingly stoic and emo. While I understand the reasoning, it made for a boring beginning. And then when he did the bare minimum, such as saying Moon isn't a slut, or not yelling at her more, Moon was so head over heels. When all you've experienced is being shit on it makes sense why she would fall for him, but personally if I was in her situation I would be too stubborn and hold a grudge. Maybe that's my grief.
At the climax of the novel when Santiago ran off so quickly after listening to Star, I was a bit confused and annoyed. Obviously this doesn't last for long because he apoloizes and blah blah blah. Their relationship was fine, I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either.

All in all I enjoyed reading this book, the exposition was slightly slow but the middle and end definitely made up for it. I related a lot to some of the things Moon was going through and also with her love of flowers, so it was enjoyable to see those in print for others to enjoy. I was glad to see a happy ending.

This book snuck up on me. In the beginning, I wasn't quite hooked into the story, but the characters are what pulled me into it. By the end, you're rooting for them to make it, for Moon and her sister Star to get out of a toxic situation. I do think the book didn't quite have to be this long, but it was still so heartbreaking. By the time I got to the second half of the story, I couldn't put this book down.

There's a lot of great diversity in this book as well. Moon and Santiago have the best chemistry, and the side characters were just as fleshed out as the main ones. Definitely worthy of all the praise it has been getting!
