this book made me cry and laugh and read which was all i was looking for. the short chapters made me anxious for more so i finished it really quickly. the whole story is very nice and i really like how in the end Star tells her that she has to take in account that Santiago was insecure just like Moon, because that was the missing piece that for me was obvious but not for her, really nice touch. one of the reasons I really like this book is this part:

“Hey, remember when we first met and you mixed up mine and Star’s name tags? Ha. That was funny.”
“Why is that funny?”
“Well, it was a good joke, you know? Having me wear Star’s name tag.”
“Yeah, I never got that joke.”
“But you’re the one who did it! How could you not get the joke?”
“Explain to me this hilarious joke.”
“You had me put Star’s name on. Ha ha. The ugly, talks-too-much and laughs-too-loud sister is wearing the perfect, beautiful angel’s name tag.”
“That’s why everyone thought that was funny? What assholes.”
“Well, why’d you do it, then?”
“You really want to know?”
“That girl Chamomile Tea, or whatever, made those name tags for everyone. And she had me pass them out. She’d tell me a line about who they belonged to, ’cause I basically knew no one. I still can barely remember everyone’s names.””Anyway, she told me that those two tags were for Star and Moon. At first I thought she was joking, because, you know, your names.”“And she said, ‘These are for the two girls over there with all the pink luggage. Star is the hot one.’ ”
“Is that the end of the story? I don’t get it.”.
“You’re seriously going to make me spell it out for you?” “Apparently I need it spelled out for me.”
“ I thought you were the hot one, Moon.”

I loved this story. Moon is my favourite person - she is a strong, funny and genuine person. I especially love when she babbling and spitting weird insults. A true Gem is Moon to the core! She has endured a childhood full of trauma but despite that, she can know what is truly right and what is truly wrong with her super Christian upbringing.

This book displays some serious mental health issues and how religion and radical thoughts can make a person unreasonable.

Santiago is grumpy and unfriendly but the closer he gets to Moon the more we see the sweetness of his personality.

I loved the view on the bad side of Christianity, the falseness of social media and a girl attempting to be different then what was taught and make a happy life for herself

Moon discovers that she is not a bad person, she has talent and value. She has a way to go in shake the abuse she has suffered but throughout all this, she can find the bright side and live life as best she can.

Add in some interesting family curses and you got yourself a super intriguing storyline. Loved!

I adored this book. The subtle poetry in Moon’s thoughts and the heartbreaking view of herself and how she overcomes it was beautiful to experience. Gilliland has perfectly captured the “little sister syndrome” that so many have to deal with and the doubt that it fills you with. The fact that we were able to watch Moon work through those feelings and find value and worth was incredible and needed.

If I could rate it more than five stars I would.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS!!!

How am I 35 years old and I relate so much to an 18 year old. The amount of shit and abuse she's dealt with, from her own mother, is appalling. But the fact that she had to get it from her sister too is just cruel! I LOVED her relationship with Santiago. How it developed. Even the bad. They were so much alike, and REALLY needed each other. I like the way this ended too. Having her Aunt/Tia as support was the best thing ever.

On my favorites list of 2022!

5 stars hands down

This is the best book I have ever read! It discusses important topics such as purity culture and body insecurity.
It's a beautiful enemies to lovers as well as a book about finding ways to love yourself. This is amazing representation for disabled and gay people, as well as for people of color. It's a beautiful book about finding beauty within one's self. This is criminally underrated and if you think you want to read it, you should. The chemistry between all of the characters was beautiful and the romance was powerful. The relationship between the main character and the love interest took my breath away. I found comfort in this book that I have never felt anywhere else. To Raquel Vasquez Gilliland, this was a masterpiece.
